Wild Chimps of Tanzania (7 days)7 days duration You have a number of visits to spend time with wild chimpanzees as they go about their daily lives in isolated forests, set within a chain of dramatic peaks draped in lush vegetation and falling to Lake Tanganyika's beaches below.
Around midday you board a light afrcraft charter flight from Arusha to Mahale National Park. On arrival you are met and taken to the luxury tented camp which will be your home for the next three nights. (D)
It is very unusual not to see the chimpanzees on each trek you undertake. Due to the remoteness of the reserves, the vehicle access is limited so all game viewing and Chimpanzee trekking is undertaken on foot or by boat. The Chimpanzee treks are undertaken in the mornings when it is still cool. Once they have been located, word is sent and you either start walking from camp or are transferred along the shore line by boat to a point closer to the chimps before beginning the trek. As these are completely wild animals which have been habituated to humans due to having been the subject of reserach for many decades, they can be anywhere in the park. There are around one thousand chimps in the park, divided up into a number of different family groups. Typically walking time is around one hour but it can be as little as twenty minutes or as much as four hours.
This morning you undertake your first chimp trek. In the afternoon you will undertake a boat cruise along the shore line to see what birds and animals are about. (BLD)
A morning Chimpanzee trek is followed in the afternoon by an other water born excursion. Many clients elect to go fishing for Nile Perch which the camp chef prepares for dinner. While listening to the distant calls of chimps, your candle lit dinner is often served on the beach in front of the camp. (BLD)
After breakfast you set off in search of the Golden Monkeys found in this area. A visit to the Golden Monkeys is a very different experience from yesterday's gorilla encounter. The monkeys reach and interact completely differently from the gorillas and will keep up their game of hide-and-seek while you watch.
This is followed by lunch while you head back to Kigali, where on arrival you check into your hotel for tonight. (BLA final trek in Mahale NP to look for chimps is undertaken today. In the late afternoon you are taken to the airfield for your light aircraft flight to Kigoma. On arrival you are met and taken to your hill top hotel for tonight. (BLD)
You are transferred to the harbour this morning, where you board a boat to Gombe National Park. On arrival you are met and taken to the luxury tented camp for a further two nights to top what will already have been a very memorable experience. You will be taken on a short walk to look for chimps in the afternoon. (BLD)
Breakfast is followed by another chimp trek. There are a number of excursions available in the afternoon for those who do not wish to relax in the camp. (BLD)
Today you will be taken back to Kigoma by boat. Following lunch you are taken on a sightseeing tour of Kigoma and Ujiji. Dr Livingstone lived in Kigoma at one point. During the tour you visit the memorial dedicated to this famous African explorer.
Following the tour you are taken to the airport for your flight to Dar es Salaam where, on arrival, your tour comes to an end. (BL) Please note: The best times to visit are May to October. A reasonable degree of fitness is required for some but not all treks. There are a number of different combinations both longer and shorter which you can choose from if this itinerary does not suit.
