Tropical East Africa Safari with Gorillas & Chimps (10 days)10 days duration
On arrival at Entebbe Airport in Uganda, you are met and taken to your hotel for tonight's accommodation. Entebbe is located on the shores of Lake Victoria, 40kms from the capital city of Kampala. (D)
After breakfast you drive to Fort Portal via Mubende where you have lunch. Before arriving at Fort Portal you undertake a guided primate forest walk at Sebitoli, located in the Eastern part of Kibale Forest NP. Different primates such as Black & White Colobus Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, Red-tailed Colobus Monkeys and even the Red Colobus Monkey can be spotted here.
Fort Portal is a small and attractive city. The fort was built between 1891 and 1893 and named after Sir Gerald Portal, the British Consul General of Zanzibar who arrived in Uganda in 1892 to formalise the protectorate of Uganda. (BLD)
After breakfast you leave for Kibale forest, renowned for the greatest variety and the highest concentration for primates in East Africa. On arrival at the visitors centre, the rangers brief you about your guided nature walk in the tropical forest in search of the wild chimpanzees. The rangers are very knowledgeable and can answer your questions about the forest and the chimps.
Following the chimp trek you depart for Mweya, enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Rwenzori Mountains en-route. It's during the wet season that you will have the best chances to have a clear view of the Rwezories Mountains. On your way to Mweya you pass Kasese town and stop at the equator for a traditional picture. You enter Queen Elizabeth NP and have a short game drive on your way to Mweya which lies on a peninsula. (BLD)
Early this morning you are driven to Kyambura NR where you are met by your ranger. He will take you to the last known location of the Chimpanzees where you descend into the gorge on a nature walk, lasting a few hours, to search for the chimps.
Following the walk you return to the lodge in Mweya. In the afternoon you undertake a boat trip on the Kazinga channel. After the boat trip your driver guide will take you for a late afternoon game drive. (BLD)
You depart for Buhoma this morning with some safari activities en-route. Bwindi has a unique, rich and varied ecosystem and has lowland rainforest and afromontane forest. It's considered as one of the most unique and important forests of Africa with UNESCO having declared it as a Natural World Heritage site. (BLD)
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a Natural World Heritage site but walks to visit the Gorillas are often longer and more difficult than in Rwanda so we have elected not to include a Gorilla Trek. If you would like to undertake a Gorilla Trek this day you can but we would need to arrange for a Gorilla trekking permit at the time of booking. (The permit cannot be obtained on arrival. The permit is not included in the tour price and is at extra cost.)
If you elect not to undertake the Gorilla Trek today you are taken on a jungle walk or a village visit. (BLD)
This morning you are taken by road to Kinigi in the foothills of the Virunga Mountains. It is a long drive but the scenery is ever varied. On arrival in Kinigi you check into your hotel for a two-night stay. (BLD)
Today involves an early morning start to search for the mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park. You have the opportunity to visit one of the habituated gorilla families. Sitting amongst them as they go about their daily activities will undoubtedly be one of the most poignant and thrilling wildlife encounters you will ever have in your life. The sheer physical presence of an adult male silverback, three times as bulky as the average man, yet remarkably peaceful and tolerant of human visitors, defies description. (BLD)
After breakfast you set off in search of the Golden Monkeys found in this area. A visit to the Golden Monkeys is a very different experience from yesterday's gorilla encounter. The monkeys react and interact completely differently from the gorillas and will keep up their game of hide-and-seek while you watch.
This is followed by lunch and a visit to Iby'Iwacu traditional village (a community based tourism project where the local community displays their traditional ways of living) while heading back to Kigali where on arrival you will check into your hotel for the night. (BL)
If time permits, you are taken on a tour of Kigali city which includes a visit to the Genocide Memorial Centre at Gisozi. In Rwanda, you will find all over the country Memorials to remember the genocide of 1994. The most important Genocide Memorials are those of Kigali (Gisozi) where the history of the genocide is explained. A visit to the genocide memorial is, for most visitors, an emotional event.
This is followed by your transfer to the airport, where your tour comes to an end. (B)
Please note: Itinerary may vary due to road conditional in the areas being visited.
