Sera Monastery: Situated to the north of Central Lhasa, it is Tibet’s the second largest monastery. This famous monastery was named after the wild roses growing around it when it was founded in 1419. At its peak it housed over 7000 monks and was famous for its warrior monks known as the “Dob-Doa”. Jokhang Temple: Situated in the heart of old Lhasa, it is the most sacred and oldest temple in Lhasa. According to tradition the temple was built for the two brides of the king, one from the Chinese Tang Dynasty and the other from Nepal. Both wives are said to have brought important Buddhist statues and images from China and Nepal to Tibet as part of their dowries and they were housed here. Norbulinkha Palace: The “Jewel Park” as it is known in Tibetan, was built in the 18th century by 7th Dalai Lama and served as the summer palace of the 13th and 14th Dalai Lamas. The palace is an interesting mixture of religious and modern elements and featured a colourful garden landscape which was the site of picnic and public gatherings. The palaces are richly decorated, creating an atmosphere of peaceful repose.
