The Southern Lakes Crossing (5 days)5 days duration
On arrival into Puerto Montt, in the Southern Lakes District of Patagonia, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Puerto Varas, a beautiful alp-like town on Lake Llanquihue. This area conatains a series of magnificent lakes cutting through and strung along the foothills of the Andes Mountain Range. (B)
You will be collected from your hotel and travel by coach around Lake Llanquihue. After entering the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park you will visit the famous Petrohue Falls and then cross Todos los Santos Lake (also known as "Esmeralda" or Emerald in English), seeing Margarita Island, Osorno Volcano and the peaks of Puntiagudo and the Tronador Mountains. When you arrive in Peulla you will pause to complete your Chilean Immigration Procedure, before being transferred to your hotel on the lake's edge for the night.
Your afternoon is at leisure to explore your unique surroundings. (B)
This morning you are collected from your hotel to continue with your beautiful Southern Lakes Crossing. You will firstly cross the Vicente Perez Rosales Pass to the Argentine Immigration and Customs point. You then travel by catamaran across Frias Lake to Puerto Alegre, where you will again board a bus to take you via a very impressive Alerce forest (the world's oldest trees) to Puerto Blest. From Puerto Blest to Puerto Panuelo is again by boat, this time on the famous Nahuel Huapi Lake. After the 90 minute crossing you will disembark at Puerto Panuelo, from where you will be taken to your Bariloche hotel for two nights. (B)
Bariloche, situated on the shore of the beautiful Lake Nahuel Huapi, is an internationally recognised ski resort with steep streets, wooden chalets perched Swiss fashion upon a glacial moraine at the foot of Cerro Otto and, without a doubt, the best centre for exploring the Nahuel Huapi National Park and surrounding areas.
Today's tour follows the southern shore of the Lake Nahuel Huapi. On a good day you may catch sight of the highest mountain in the area, El Tronador, whose snow capped peaks rise up to 3,478 metres. You then follow the southern edge of Lake Moreno under the steep cliffs of Mount Lopez to the spectacular view point for a magnificent vista looking back towards the Andes that you have traversed. The breathtaking views include Lake Moreno, the famous Llao Llao Hotel and the northern arm of Lake Nahuel Huapi. (B)
You have the morning free to absorb this wonderful spot before being transferred to Bariloche Airport for your onward flight. (B)
