Malawi Highlights (7 days)7 days duration
Your tour begins on arrival in Lilongwe Airport where you will be met and taken by road to Cape Maclear at the bottom end of Lake Malawi. Enroute you visit the famous Mua Mission and Museum where you may be able to gain a better understanding about Malawi's three main tribes. All their history, culture and rituals are exposed in this colourful museum.
On arrival in Cape Maclear you are taken by boat to your fully furnished tented camp on Mumbo Island in the Lake Malawi National Park, for a two-night stay. The camp is built on the outskirts of the island and provides the most exclusive views over Lake Malawi. (D)
You spend today relaxing on Mumbo Island. Lake Malawi National Park is probably the most important freshwater fish sanctuary in Africa, protecting a diversity of endemic tropical fish species (Cyclids). Scuba diving and snorkelling in this tropical paradise are therefore popular activities, as well as swimming or exploring the island's surroundings on foot. (BLD)
After breakfast on the island you are taken back to the mainland where you are met and driven to the interesting Colonial town of Zomba, the former capital of Malawi. Here you can visit the colourful and busy markets in town before heading up the Zomba Plateau to your hotel, built on the cliffs of the plateau overlooking the beautiful gardens and pine forest of the Zomba Valley below. (BD)
You spend the day on the Zomba Plateau, one of the most popular areas in Malawi for walking and hiking. You may go for a hike to Chingwe's Hole or to see one of the many waterfalls and stunning viewpoints. (BLD)
After breakfast you descend from the plateau as you are driven to your lodge in Liwonde National Park. You arrive around lunch time. Your lodge overlooks the beautiful Shire River with the veranda of each of the chalets raised to ensure prime and discreet game viewing.
Mvuu, the name of the lodge, means hippo in Chichewa and the lodge is located on the hippo infested Shire River in the national park. Although relatively small in size, there is plenty of wildlife to be seen here. (BLD)
Today you may undertake game drives, walks, night drives or a boat ride into the park, accompanied by a guide from the lodge. Waterbuck, Sable, Impala, Rhino and Elephant are found close to the Shire River. Further into the national park, animals such as Lion, Leopard and Kudu can also be spotted.
A boat ride on the Shire River offers an excellent opportunity to come really close to the many birds and animals who must depend on this beautiful river for their survival. (BLD)
After breakfast you will be driven back to Lilongwe Airport where, on arrival in the early afternoon, your Malawi Highlights Tour comes to an end. (B)
