Gorillas in the Mist (6 days)6 days duration One the western side of the plateau you will find Rwanda's principal geographic feature; the famous Virunga chain of volcanoes which extend towards the D R Congo and Ugandan borders. These volcanoes form part of the Albertine Rift Valley and it is here that one can find Rwanda's most important tourist attraction: the mountain gorillas! Rwanda also has a rich history and culture.
On arrival at Kigali Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel for the night.
This morning you are collected by your driver-guide and undertake a comprehensive Kigali city tour, including a visit to the Genocide Memorial at Gisozi. For most visitors, a visit to the Genocide Memorial is an emotional event. Later you are driven to Kinigi in the foothills of the Virunga Mountains. Here you check into your lodge for a two-night stay. (BLD)
Today is an early morning start to search for the mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park. You have the opportunity to visit one of the habituated gorilla families. Sitting amongst them as they go about their daily activities will undoubtedly be one of the most poignant and thrilling wildlife encounters you will have.
The sheer physical presence of an adult male silverback, three times as bulky as the average man, yet remarkable peaceful and tolerant of humans, defies description. The remainder of the day is a leisure. (BLD)
After breakfast you set off in search of the rare Golden Monkeys which are also found in this area. A visit to the Golden Monkeys is a very different experience from yesterday's gorilla encounter. The monkeys react and interact completely differently from the gorillas and keep up their game of hide-and-seek while you watch. This is followed by lunch before heading for your hotel, located on the shores of Lake Kivu. (BLD)
Today you can do as much or as little as you want. You can stay on the private beach of your hotel and enjoy the peaceful lake. If you prefer, you can visit some splendid sites on the way back to Kigali. They include Nyundo, with its multiple craft-shops or the Imbabazi Orphanage at Mugongo, home to many of the Genocide orphans. On arrival in Kigali you check into your hotel for the night. (BLD)
Today you will be transferred to the airport, where your tour comes to an end. (B)
