Ethnic Nagaland Tour (8 days)

8 days duration

Located in the northeastern corner of India, Nagaland, sometimes called the ‘Switzerland of the East’, is made up of sixteen major tribes, each with its on language, culture and traditions. A land of festivals, all Naga tribes celebrate their distinct festivals, which are seasonal in nature and are characterised by grand displays of colour, music and dance. Once a year they all get together for a combined celebration.

In the first days of December the annual Hornbill Festival takes place in the village of Kisema in Nagaland. This grand ceremony has become well known for its authenticity and exposure to the different cultures to be found in the region.

As this is a very remote part of India, accommodation and meals are quite basic and would be considered as international two-star at best. If you are willing to overlook this you are in for a unique experience as this is well off the regular tourist route and few Westerners have experienced this festival. For something completely different, it is possible to stay with a local family as opposed to in a hotel. The experience is hard to beat but the facilities are very basic.

Day 1 Arrive Dimapur / Kohima

On arrival in Dimapur you will be met and transferred by road to your hotel in Kohima. Here you will reside for a culture filled seven-night stay. (D)

As you enter you notice a number of entrances with traditional wooden gates containing the scimitar horns of Mithun. The motifs reflect the bravery and valour of the local Angami people. In the village you also come across wooden carvings looking like horns atop some houses and relic stone constructions in front of the houses. These are memorial symbols of the feasts offered to the ancestors. Later you are returned to your hotel. (BLD
