5 days duration

Day 2 Quito - City Tour

This morning you will be taken on a city tour of Quito. You will visit the stone carved facade of Ecuador's House of Congress, depicting scenes from Ecuador’'s past, before continuing to Independence Square, the Presidential Palace and the Cathedral. You also visit the church of La Compana from 1605, with its golden altars, the finest example of Baroque art in South America and the church and monastery of San Francisco from 1535.

Following lunch you will be taken to the Equatorial Monument North of Quito. It marks latitude 0 or the exact Middle of the World. Here you can stand with a foot in each hemisphere! Day 3 Quito - Otavalo

This morning you will travel north from Quito to reach the Awakening Valley with its bread-dough figures and Cayambe for its food specialties. You will pass through the beautiful Andean landscape before reaching Otavalo, home of the Otavalo Indians, a prosperous and enterprising indigenous group. You will spend the day at the Otavalo Markets discovering enticing products such as textiles, paintings, ceramics, leather goods, jewellery, tapestries and more. Lunch will be served at a typical hacienda.

Before returning to Quito you will visit Peguche, an Indian village near Otavalo, which is home to the artisans who do weaving in their homes. Here you can learn about their culture and beliefs. (BL)

Day 4 Quito - Cotopaxi

This morning your adventure starts in Quito with a transfer to the station of Tambillo. Here the Chiva Express, a colourful one-coach train, like a bus on tracks, will be ready to depart. A highlight of this trip is that you get to ‘ride the roof’ with a panoramic view of this stunning region of Ecuador. On arrival at Machachi, near Cotopaxi Volcano, you will be taken by coach to the moorlands for a short walk.

Here lunch will be served at a local hacienda, a farm house built with local materials like straw and eucalyptus wood. A blazing fireplace warms the dining room, where you will enjoy a wonderful meal made from fresh local produce. There will be time to horseback ride, bird watch or explore the surroundings on foot before the return to Quito in the afternoon. (BLD
