Araras Pantanal Lodge Tour (5 days)
5 days duration
Pantanal & Mato Grosso do Sul Wildlife Experience
The Pantanal is the largest contiguous wetland on the planet. Declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, it is South America’s primary wildlife sanctuary. With a total area of approximately 150,000 square km and located in the centre of the continent, the Pantanal is a biogeographic mixing bowl containing elements of the Amazonian Forest, the Brazilian Savannah and the Atlantic Rainforest.
This fantastic biodiversity includes many species of mammals, fishes, reptiles and an enormous variety of native birds. The Pantanal is therefore the best place in South America for flora and fauna.
Climate of the Pantanal
The Pantanal’s landscape is ever-changing. The summers are hot, with an average maximum of 32 degrees Celsius and in the winter, it is usually dry and cool, with an average maximum of 21 degrees Celsius.
The Wet Season - from December to March
As a result of the summer rains parts of the Pantanal becomes submerged with water, the flora and fauna are rejuvenated and the Pantanal enters some of its most exuberant annual periods.
The Receding Waters Season - from April to June
In April, the rains stop and the water levels begin to recede, forming small lakes and ponds. Thousands of fish become trapped in these reservoirs, creating a virtual buffet for various species of aquatic birds. The average temperature is milder and the night skies are filled with stars.
The Dry Season - from July to November
This is the best time to observe the wildlife. As the lagoons shrink from a lack of rain, the terrain opens up and land transportation becomes possible. The drying fields provide excellent grazing areas, attracting animals in search of food, while the drying ponds provide a source of water. Around August the trees begin to flower and they intensify, as the dry season progresses, into November.
