Africa Sensations Tour (24 days)24 days duration
Today you make your way to the airport for your flight to Singapore. On arrival you remain in transit for your connecting flight to Cape Town. (Meals in flight)
This On arrival at Cape Town International Airport this morning you are met and taken to our hotel for a three-night stay. Later we hold an informal Tour orientation meeting while enjoying a welcome drink or two. (Meal in flight) Please note, we stay at a hotel located within the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and within walking distance of the main attractions. Most hotels are located outside of the V&A Waterfront and require a bus ride to get to the attractions. Some hotels located within the V&A Waterfront, such as SAS Radisson Hotel, also require a bus ride to get to the attractions. A bus ride means you have to fit in with the schedule and can’t come and go as you wish.
This morning we enjoy a city tour taking in the highlights of Cape Town, which include the Castle of Good Hope from 1666, the Malay Quarter and the magnificent Table Mountain. Here we ascend to the top (weather permitting) by revolving cable car, where you are able to marvel at the birds-eye view of the city and its beaches far below. After descending from the mountain we have lunch. This afternoon you can choose from one of the included optional tours below. (BL)
OPTION ONE: Proceed to the harbour where you board a ferry to Robben Island, formerly a political prison and now a museum and a National Monument. Here you view what was once Nelson Mandela’s maximum-security prison cell during his 18 years of incarceration.
OPTION TWO: Undertake an afternoon tour to historic Stellenbosch and visit the winelands for a wine tasting stop.
Today’s pleasant tour begins with a scenic drive along the Atlantic Coast, with its glorious views of the Twelve Apostles, part of the Table Mountain Range; the fishing village of Hout Bay, one of Cape Town’s best-kept secrets; and then on to Cape Point in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. You then continue along the False Bay Coastline and returning to Cape Town by way of Simon’s Town where you visit the Penguin Colony at Boulders Beach and view Fishoek fishing village and the Muizenberg Mountain. On arrival at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens we undertake a short walking tour of these beautiful gardens.
Our return journey takes us past the University of Cape Town, Rhodes Memorial and the Groote Schuur Hospital where the world’s first successful human heart-transplant was performed in 1967. (BL)
Following breakfast we are taken to the airport for our flight to Johannesburg where, upon arrival, we are met and undertake a tour of Soweto during which we gain a fascinating glimpse into bustling neighborhood life of a township. (BL)
This morning we take the shuttle bus back to the airport where we clear customs and immigration for our flight to Livingstone in Zambia. Upon arrival we are met and taken to our hotel for a two night stay. The remainder of the day is at leisure. In the late afternoon we undertake a ‘sundowner’ cruise on the upper Zambezi River during which you have a chance of seeing elephant, crocodiles and hippos. (B)
Following breakfast we are taken on a tour of the Victoria Falls during which you get to see them from the Zambian side. There are a number of activities you may wish to undertake such as a helicopter flight over the falls (at own cost). This evening we again come together for dinner. (BLD)
On Botswana's far northern border lies the Kwando, Linyanti and Chobe River system forming a series of lakes, islands and floodplains. This area forms the Chobe National Park, famous for its large buffalo and elephant herds. In addition to a variety of predators, there is an abundance of wild game and bird life which decorate these beautiful waterways. Following breakfast we are taken by road to our chosen lodge located adjacent to the Chobe National Park. We have time to relax this afternoon before participating in a sunset cruise on the river to observe the animals as they come down to drink. (BLD)
Game viewing in Chobe is a unique experience as Chobe National Park is the best place in the world to see the majestic African elephant for it is home to the world’s largest elephant population. Game drives into the Chobe National Park depart daily or alternatively choose a cruise, led by an expert guide. Cruises along the Chobe River are a wonderful and somewhat different way of viewing the game. During the dry season in particular, the wildlife congregate in numbers at the water’s edge to quench their thirst. (BLD)
Following breakfast we are taken by road to the airport where we board our flight back to Johannesburg. On arrival at Johannesburg Airport we catch the hotel shuttle bus to our conveniently located airport hotel for the night. (B)
This morning we catch the shuttle bus back to the airport for our morning flight to Arusha with a plane change in either Nairobi or Dar es Salam. On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha this evening, we are met and taken to our hotel for the night. (B)
PLEASE NOTE: This tour visits ALL the areas where the Great Migration goes so it does not matter what time of year you travel as you should encounter the animals at some point on the tour. By undertaking a tour that only goes to Kenya or to Tanzania you could miss the migration altogether as it is difficult to predict where the animals will be on any given day when planning a tour. The migrations arrival and departure varies by up to a month in either direction so you can be as much a two months out.
After breakfast we are taken by road to our lodge overlooking Lake Manyara and the Rift Valley. This park is located between the wall of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Manyara and is famous for its tree climbing lions and hot spring waters (Maji moto). This afternoon we undertake a safari drive into the park in search of the animals that call it home. (BLD)
Today we depart and drive to Ngorongoro Crater– one of the Wonders of the World and a designated World Heritage Site. Our lodge has commanding views, probably the most breathtaking in East Africa.
Following lunch at our lodge we visit Olduvai Gorge, the archaeological site where some of the world’s most important anthropological finds have been made. There is a small museum and at the lookout on the edge of the gorge one of the local experts will tell us about the excavations below, taking you back in time to envisage our ancestors at the dawn of mankind. You also visit a nearby Maasai village to meet the proud people, who have lived on these plains with their herds of cattle in harmony with the local wildlife since time immemorial. Following the visits we return to our lodge for the night. (BLD)
This morning we leave early in our game viewing vehicles and descend the 670 metres to the Crater floor below for a fantastic day among Africa’s “Big 5” Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo and other wildlife. (BLD)
Today we leave Ngorongoro Crater for the Serengeti. Although it is quite a long drive it does double as a safari drive with animals to be seen along the way. Arriving at our lodge in the afternoon we settle down for the night. (BLD)
The landscape of the park, with its low vegetation and vast seas of open plain, is ideal for game viewing. Famed for its annual migrations of Wildebeest, Zebras, and Gazelles which are tracked by an impressive array of predators such as Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, and Hyenas, we are in for a thrilling few days of game viewing. We spend the morning and afternoon game viewing in this wildlife paradise which is Tanzania’s largest national park and one of the largest nature reserves in the world. (BLD)
After breakfast we depart from our lodge with a picnic lunch for the drive to the Masai Mara, crossing the border between Tanzania and Kenya en-route. After clearing customs and immigration, we are driven to our lodge in the Masai Mara. (Depending on when the rains were, this road can be quite rough at times). (BLD)
PLEASE NOTE: Depending on the time of year we either spend three nights in the Serengeti or the Masai Mara to take advantage of the best game viewing.
Today we undertake morning and afternoon game drives in this spectacular game reserve, all with superb photographic opportunities. Blessed with a permanent water supply, Masai Mara has a permanent population of plains game including some of the “Big 5” – Elephant, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard which can be quite common. (BLD)
